Your Smart Speaker is Always Listening. Here's What That Means.

"Hey Alexa, what's the weather in Hamilton today?"

It’s undeniably convenient. Smart speakers and voice assistants have woven themselves into our daily lives. But that convenience comes with a privacy price tag we need to talk about.

To be clear: these devices aren't constantly streaming everything you say to a server. They listen locally for a "wake word" (like "Alexa" or "Hey Google"). But once they hear it, they do record what you say and send it to the cloud for processing.

Here's the rub:

  1. Accidental Activations Happen: The device can mishear a word and start recording when you don't intend it to. Private, sensitive conversations can be—and have been—recorded by mistake.
  2. The Data is Stored: These voice recordings are often saved to your account to "improve the service." They can be reviewed by human employees and are a tempting target for hackers or government subpoenas.
  3. It Builds a Profile: Your questions and commands reveal your interests, habits, and lifestyle, adding yet another layer to the digital profile companies have on you.

Being smart about your smart speaker means being mindful. Review your privacy settings, delete old recordings regularly, and consider turning off the microphone when you're having sensitive conversations. It’s about finding the balance between future-cool and foolish.
